Jesus’ Commandments (Posted on YouTube 19 October 2008)
This is a video response to my video, The Implanted Word.
People want to know: Which, are the commandments of Jesus?
I just want to recap:
We are not justified by the works of the law, but faith in Christ and obedience
to Jesus Christ.
We read in Galatians 2:16 "Nevertheless, knowing that a man is not
justified by the works of the law but through faith in Christ Jesus even we
have believed in Christ Jesus so that we may be justified by faith in Christ
and not by the works of the law since by the works of the law no flesh will be
justified."
We read in Galatians 5:2, Paul writes "Behold I, Paul, say to you that
if you receive circumcision, Christ will be of no benefit to you. 3And I
testify again to every man who receives circumcision, that he is under
obligation to keep the whole Law. 4You have been severed from Christ, you who
are seeking to be justified by law; you have fallen from grace."
Many people preach that we are to observe the Ten Commandments – the law of
Moses. We are to observe the commandments of Jesus Christ. What are these
commandments? Jesus said in the Great Commission (Matt 28: 19-20), he says:
"19Go therefore, make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the
name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, 20teaching them to
observe all that I commanded you, and lo, I am with you always, even to the end
of the age."
Now, Jesus’ commandments, that He taught His disciples, are all written – the
words of Jesus – as we call it, in the four Gospels; Matthew, Mark, Luke and
John; those are His commandments. But, those commandments are all combined in
the one single commandment which is written in John 13, verse 34 – Jesus, He
said, "A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even
as I have loved you, that you also love one another."
Now a rich ruler came to Jesus, and he asked Him what he should do to obtain
eternal life. Now Jesus answered him (and I’ll read that from Matthew chapter
19 verse 16) 16And someone came to Him and said, "Teacher, what good
thing shall I do that I may obtain eternal life?" 17And He said to
him, "Why are you asking Me about what is good? There is only One who is
good; but if you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments." 18Then
he said to Him, "Which ones?" And Jesus said, "(R)YOU SHALL NOT
COMMIT MURDER; YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT ADULTERY; YOU SHALL NOT STEAL; YOU SHALL
NOT BEAR FALSE WITNESS; 19HONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER; and YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR
NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF."
Now Paul writes the same. Paul never knew the words of Jesus; he never knew
Jesus in the flesh, but he received the same Gospel as a revelation directly
from Jesus, through the Holy Spirit. And he speaks these same words, through
the Holy Spirit, in his letter to the Romans. Romans 13 verses 8-10 "8Owe
nothing to anyone except to love one another; for he who loves his neighbor has
fulfilled the law. 9For this, "YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT ADULTERY, YOU SHALL
NOT MURDER, YOU SHALL NOT STEAL, YOU SHALL NOT COVET," and if there is any
other commandment, it is summed up in this saying, "YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR
NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF." 10Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love
is the fulfillment of the law."
He (Paul) writes the same in Galatians 5:14 "For )the whole Law is
fulfilled in one word, in the statement, "YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS
YOURSELF."
And THAT is what is meant by the commandments of Jesus Christ. These are His
commandments – He does not talk about sabbath, circumcision, or the rest of the
law of Moses. These – these are the commandments of Jesus Christ that we shall
keep, to obey Him.
